San Maurizio church in Milan - english tour
Imposte incluse.
Guided tour inside the Church of San Maurizio. Anna Pinto, a licensed tour guide, will illustrate the 16th-century frescoes that have given Milan its "Sistine Chapel."
The church was rebuilt in the early 16th century on the ruins of an older church. A plaque embedded in the interior of the building bears the words "lapis primarius" and the year 1503. The interior is divided into two parts: the Hall of the Faithful, consisting of four bays, and the Hall of the Nuns, which contains six bays. The church is entirely painted by Lombard painters, including Bernardino Luini and other artists from the school of Leonardo. The extensive restoration work, begun in 1986 and completed thirty years later, returned the "Sistine Chapel of the Milanese" to the city.
The guided tour will take you through the church's two halls, leading you through the marvels of the fresco cycles and recounting the history of the architecture and restoration that brought this 16th-century Lombard masterpiece back to its former splendor.
