La Scala Theatre is the most famous in Italy. La Scala Theatre has been designed by the neoclassical architect Giuseppe Piermarini under the reign of the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. The theatre was inaugurated on the 3rd August 1778 with Antonio Salieri's opera "L'Europa riconosciuta". La Scala Theatre was a place for all kinds of entertainments at the beginning: the stalls area was intended for the ball, the boxes used by the owners to receive guests, to eat, to drink and to manage their social life. In other boxes they gambled, there was even a roulette, introduced by the manager Domenico Barbaja in 1805.
On the night of 15/16 August 1943, the Theatre has been damaged by bombing of the Royal Air Force. After a rapid rebuilding on the 11th May 1946, the La Scala Theatre opened with a concert by the orchestra director Arturo Toscanini with Gioacchino Rossini's opera "La gazza ladra".
From 2002 to 2004 the Swiss architect Mario Botta submitted a new project of the scenic tower, the elliptical tower and the service environments.
On the 1 May 1911 the antique dealer Jules Sambon put up for auction the prestigious objects collection linked to the world of theater. The La Scala Theatre Museum opened two years later at the former gambling home Ricordi.
